AWS & Cloud Certifications, Which Ones Matter

The specific AWS, Azure, and Kubernetes certifications that actually move a DevOps career forward, ranked by real hiring signal, not vendor marketing.

Cloud certifications carry more real hiring weight in DevOps than in almost any other engineering discipline, largely because they’re a fast, standardized way for a recruiter or hiring manager to verify baseline competence with the specific platform a company runs on. Not all certifications are equally valuable, though, and stacking too many low-signal badges wastes time better spent on hands-on project work. Here’s an honest ranking of which ones actually matter.

The Certifications Worth Prioritizing

CertificationLevelWhy It Matters
AWS Certified Cloud PractitionerFoundationalBroad baseline credibility; good first step for career changers, low standalone weight for experienced engineers.
AWS Certified SysOps Administrator / DevOps Engineer ProfessionalAssociate/ProThe most directly relevant AWS certs for DevOps roles; strong hiring signal, especially the Professional level.
Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)Hands-onWidely respected, hands-on practical exam (not multiple choice); strong signal for infrastructure-heavy roles.
Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer ExpertExpertThe Azure equivalent; valuable specifically for teams and companies standardized on Microsoft’s cloud.
HashiCorp Certified: Terraform AssociateAssociateIncreasingly requested given Terraform’s dominance in infrastructure as code; relatively fast to prepare for.

Why the Professional/Expert Level Matters More Than Foundational

A common mistake is stopping at the Foundational level (AWS Cloud Practitioner, Azure Fundamentals) and treating it as sufficient, when in practice these entry-level certifications mainly help you pass initial resume screening rather than demonstrate real skill. Hiring managers who actually know the certification landscape recognize Foundational certs as a starting point, not a differentiator; the Associate and Professional/Expert level certifications are what actually signal hands-on competence and carry meaningful weight in a hiring decision or promotion conversation.

The Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) deserves particular mention because, unlike most vendor certifications, it’s a hands-on practical exam performed in a live terminal environment rather than multiple choice, which makes it a stronger, harder-to-fake signal of real skill and is respected accordingly across the industry regardless of which cloud platform a company uses.

How to Actually Prepare, Not Just Pass

The fastest way to waste a certification is to cram multiple-choice question banks without building the underlying hands-on skill, since interviewers will quickly notice the gap between a certification on a resume and actual demonstrated ability in a technical screen. Effective preparation combines official study material with genuinely building the things being tested, provisioning real infrastructure, configuring the specific services covered, and ideally documenting a small project that uses the skills the certification claims you have. This dual approach means the certification and your practical portfolio reinforce each other rather than the certification standing alone as an unverified claim.

Multi-Cloud Certifications: Worth Pursuing Both?

Pursuing certifications across both AWS and Azure is rarely the highest-value move early in a career, since it splits study time across two ecosystems instead of building deep expertise in one. It becomes more worthwhile once you’re targeting consulting-style roles (like the ones covered in our AWS and Azure DevOps consulting service) or roles at companies that explicitly run multi-cloud infrastructure, where the ability to speak credibly to both platforms is itself the differentiator. For most individual contributors early in their career, going deep on one platform first and adding the second later, once the first is solid, produces a stronger overall trajectory than spreading thin across both from the start.

Employer Reimbursement and Study Time

Many employers reimburse certification exam fees and study materials outright, particularly for certifications aligned with the cloud platform the company already uses, since the resulting skill directly benefits their infrastructure. It’s worth asking directly rather than assuming this isn’t offered; even companies without a formal learning budget policy will often approve a specific, well-justified certification request when asked. Combining employer-covered cost with dedicated study time (some companies also grant paid time for exam preparation) meaningfully lowers the real cost of building out a certification portfolio compared to self-funding everything independently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I pursue AWS or Azure certifications first?

Whichever platform your target companies or current employer actually uses. AWS has broader overall market share, but Azure dominates in specific industries and Microsoft-heavy enterprises.

How many certifications should I have before applying to jobs?

One to two well-chosen, higher-level certifications (Associate or above) paired with real project work outperforms a long list of Foundational-level badges.

Do certifications expire?

Most cloud certifications require renewal every 2-3 years, either through a renewal exam or continuing education credits, so factor ongoing maintenance into the decision.

Is the CKA worth it if I’m not using Kubernetes yet?

It’s a meaningful time investment; consider it once Kubernetes is relevant to your target roles rather than pursuing it purely speculatively before you have hands-on exposure.
